A vehicle fire on Highway 401 at Lakeridge Road caused significant traffic disruptions in Durham Region Tuesday afternoon, forcing lane and ramp closures as emergency crews responded quickly to contain the situation.

According to the OPP Highway Safety Division, an SUV caught fire in the westbound lanes of Highway 401 shortly before 1 p.m. The incident occurred near the Lakeridge Road interchange, a busy corridor that connects motorists travelling between Pickering and Clarington and serves as a key access point for commuters moving through eastern Durham Region.

Witnesses reported seeing smoke rising from the vehicle before flames became visible. Images later shared by authorities showed a heavily damaged SUV stopped along the right-hand westbound lane. Fire crews arrived promptly to extinguish the blaze, while police officers secured the area to protect other drivers from potential hazards.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported in connection with the vehicle fire on Highway 401 at Lakeridge Road. It is not yet clear whether the driver was able to exit the vehicle before flames intensified, but emergency responders confirmed that everyone involved was safe. The SUV, however, sustained extensive damage and was left burnt out on the shoulder.

As a result of the Highway 401 vehicle fire at Lakeridge Road, the right-hand westbound lane was temporarily blocked. The on-ramp from Lakeridge Road onto westbound Highway 401 was also closed while crews carried out cleanup operations and assessed the roadway for debris or fire-related damage. Traffic quickly backed up as drivers were forced to merge into fewer lanes during one of the busier periods of the day.

Motorists travelling westbound through Pickering and Clarington experienced delays throughout the lunch hour. Police advised drivers to reduce speed, follow posted signage and remain patient while emergency crews worked. Congestion extended several kilometres at times as traffic flow slowed in the affected area.

The OPP Highway Safety Division reminded motorists of Ontario’s Move Over law, which requires drivers to slow down and, when safe, move over one lane when approaching emergency vehicles with flashing lights. Officials emphasized that compliance with this law helps protect first responders and roadside workers.

The exact cause of the vehicle fire on Highway 401 at Lakeridge Road remains under investigation. Mechanical failure is often a factor in highway vehicle fires, particularly in older vehicles or those experiencing engine or fuel system issues. Investigators will determine whether the fire was related to a mechanical problem or another cause.

Cleanup operations continued into the early afternoon as crews removed the damaged SUV and cleared debris from the roadway. Drivers were encouraged to check traffic updates before travelling and to consider alternate routes where possible.

Incidents like the vehicle fire on Highway 401 at Lakeridge Road highlight the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and remaining alert while driving on major highways, especially on one of North America’s busiest transportation corridors.
