An estimated 350 people attended the first Uxbridge candidates forum for the 2026 municipal election, where ward contenders discussed growth, traffic, online voting and rural communities.
The Uxbridge Cosmos hosted the forum at the arena on Monday, September 21. A second forum is planned for September 28 for mayoral, regional-councillor and school-board candidates.
Hamlets and growth featured in opening remarks
Incumbents Pam Beach, Gordon Shreeve and Willie Popp pointed to their council records. Challengers raised concerns about communities outside the urban area, governance and responsible growth.
Karen Wood Kenyon and Janet Betts focused on hamlets. Christine McKenzie emphasized accountability and transparency. Alex Orr cited traffic and speeding, while Popp referred to downtown revitalization work.
Candidates split on online voting
Lori Kennedy, Wood Kenyon and Betts opposed online voting. W. David Ward also expressed concern, while Popp said it could improve participation. Beach said she had concerns but supported council’s decision for economic reasons.
Moderator Ted Barris reminded residents that four Voter Assistance Centres will be available during the October 13-to-26 voting period. Candidates also discussed truck traffic and support for agriculture.
