A new Uxbridge seniors centre is now operating from Sandford Community Centre, west of the urban area, with $41,233 in provincial support.
The Ux55+ Seniors Active Living Centre is intended to give older adults in rural Uxbridge more opportunities to stay active, meet other residents and take part in community programs close to home.
Funding supports rural seniors
Ontario Finance Minister and Pickering-Uxbridge MPP Peter Bethlenfalvy said the investment is meant to help local seniors build social connections, remain engaged and maintain their independence.
Uxbridge Mayor Dave Barton said rural residents can face added risks of isolation and inactivity. He described the centre as a welcoming place for people aged 55 and older to stay connected and participate in meaningful programs.
The Sandford site is part of Ontario’s broader Seniors Active Living Centre program. The province says it is investing close to $23 million this year in 416 programs, including 97 new locations.
Centre adds a local place to connect
The Uxbridge seniors centre brings programming to Sandford Community Centre rather than requiring rural residents to travel into larger communities for every activity. Local officials say the goal is to improve quality of life through social, recreational and wellness opportunities.
Ontario is also marking 60 years since the first six centres were established under legislation in 1966. The programs have since expanded across the province under the Seniors Active Living Centre name.
