Durham Region commuters are being advised to plan ahead as ongoing road construction, recent collisions, and infrastructure repairs continue to affect traffic flow, including key sections of Highway 401.
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation has announced construction activity on Highway 401 westbound collector lanes between Whites Road in Pickering and Meadowvale Road in Toronto, which may cause delays for motorists travelling through the area.
In Pickering, a collision occurred on Highway 401 eastbound collector lanes at Liverpool Road. Both shoulders and two lanes were temporarily closed while crews cleared the scene and removed damaged vehicles.
Another collision was reported on the Highway 401 eastbound ramp at Liberty Street in Clarington, where all lanes were closed for a short period before reopening.
Within the Town of Whitby, Brock Street South remains closed in both directions between Ontario Street and Gilbert Street. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
The Regional Municipality of Durham has also issued an advisory regarding lane restrictions on Thickson Road North, between Crawford Street and Dundas Street East, due to an active watermain break. To maintain traffic flow, the southbound lane is closed from Crawforth Street to Dundas Street East while repair work continues. The restrictions will remain in place until repairs are completed.
Additionally, the Township of Whitby has highlighted several long-term infrastructure projects, including the ongoing closure of Columbus Road between Country Lane and Cedarbrook Trail, which is expected to remain closed until 2028.
This multi-year project involves widening Columbus Road from two lanes to five lanes, with additional lanes at major intersections. Work includes hydro pole relocation, utility adjustments, environmental clearing before April 1, and major road construction beginning in April. All north–south roads crossing Columbus Road will remain open, and posted detour routes are in place.
Motorists are encouraged to stay informed, allow extra travel time, and follow posted signage when navigating affected areas.
