Durham Region residents can look forward to a warm and sunny Sunday as June comes to a close, with temperatures expected to feel like 31 C before a prolonged stretch of hot weather arrives for Canada Day week.

According to Environment Canada, Sunday, June 28, will begin with some patchy morning fog across parts of southern Ontario before skies clear to mostly sunny conditions. The fog is expected to dissipate early, making way for a bright and pleasant day across Oshawa, Pickering, and surrounding communities.

Afternoon temperatures are forecast to reach approximately 28 C across Durham Region. Combined with increasing humidity, however, the Humidex will make it feel closer to 31 C, creating ideal conditions for outdoor recreation, festivals, parks, beaches, and community events.

Similar warm weather is expected across much of southern Ontario, including Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton, Niagara, and Brampton, where sunshine and elevated humidity will dominate the forecast throughout the day.

Environment Canada advises residents spending time outdoors to stay hydrated and protect themselves from prolonged sun exposure. Applying sunscreen, wearing lightweight clothing, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat can help reduce the effects of strong summer sunshine during the afternoon.

By Sunday evening, temperatures will gradually cool to approximately 15 C, providing comfortable overnight conditions. The cooler nighttime temperatures may offer a welcome break before significantly hotter weather arrives early in the week.

Forecasters say the pleasant conditions on Sunday will be short-lived as southern Ontario prepares for another extended period of heat beginning Monday. Daytime temperatures are expected to climb above 30 C, while Humidex values will make conditions feel considerably warmer.

The developing heat is expected to continue through Canada Day and into next weekend, bringing several consecutive days of hot and humid weather across Durham Region and much of southern Ontario.

Health officials encourage residents to begin preparing for the warmer conditions by drinking plenty of water, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, checking on elderly neighbours and vulnerable family members, and ensuring pets have access to shade and fresh water.

Drivers should also be aware that vehicles can heat up rapidly during periods of extreme warmth. Children and pets should never be left unattended inside parked vehicles, even for a short period.

Sunday’s forecast provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities before the more intense summer heat settles across the region. Whether visiting local waterfronts, attending community events, or spending time in neighbourhood parks, residents can expect comfortable weather with abundant sunshine throughout the day.

With summer officially underway and Canada Day celebrations just around the corner, Durham Region is preparing for a hot start to the new week as one of the season’s first significant heat events moves into southern Ontario.
