A terrifying night at a local cinema has resulted in serious criminal charges for three individuals who allegedly put public safety at risk for digital clicks. The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) announced on Tuesday that a massive disturbance at the Landmark Cinemas in Whitby was not a legitimate threat, but a calculated stunt designed to generate social media content. The incident, which took place on St. Patrick’s Day, forced an emergency evacuation of the theatre and left moviegoers in a state of panic.

The Landmark Cinemas Disturbance

The chaos erupted just before 11:30 p.m. on March 17, when a group allegedly began yelling that an individual inside the theatre was in possession of a firearm. The threat triggered an immediate and frantic response from staff and patrons, many of whom scrambled for the exits in fear for their lives. Local officers from the Central West Division arrived on the scene to find a cleared building and a community in shock.

Upon further investigation, detectives determined that the entire ordeal was an “intentional false disturbance.” Police allege that the group was filming the reactions of terrified customers to use as social media content, prioritizing viral engagement over the well-being of the public. Fortunately, no physical injuries were reported during the stampede to exit the building, though the psychological impact on the families present remains significant.

Suspects Identified and Charged

The DRPS has identified the adults involved in the stunt. Fique Wamiq Ayub (23) and Jaiden Joseph-Anthony Mosquera (23), both residents of Ajax, are facing multiple charges. A 17-year-old male, also from Ajax, has been charged as well; his identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The trio is facing the following charges:

  • Mischief

  • Causing a Disturbance

All three accused were released on an Undertaking, with a future court date pending. Police emphasized that using public fear as a backdrop for social media content is a drain on emergency resources and carries severe legal consequences.

Call for Evidence and Public Impact

While the arrests have been made, the investigation remains active. Constable McGregor of the Central West Division is asking anyone who may have captured the incident on a cell phone or dash cam to come forward. Police are particularly interested in any footage that may have been uploaded to platforms like TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube before being deleted.

The Landmark Cinemas incident serves as a stark warning to “influencers” in Whitby and the broader Durham Region. Law enforcement has made it clear that “pranks” involving threats of violence are viewed as criminal acts, not entertainment. Residents with information are encouraged to call 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2060 or provide anonymous tips through Durham Regional Crime Stoppers.
