Authorities in the Durham Region are investigating a violent encounter in downtown Oshawa that left a security guard assaulted while attempting to de-escalate a parking lot dispute. The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has released a description of the suspect involved in the March 19 incident and is urging witnesses or those with video footage to come forward to assist with the ongoing criminal investigation.
The Downtown Oshawa Altercation
The disturbance began at approximately 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2026, in a parking structure located near Mary Street North and King Street East. According to police reports, a male suspect was observed attempting to block the path of a vehicle exiting the garage. Witnesses suggest the suspect also tried to cause physical damage to the vehicle, leading to a confrontation that mirrored a road rage scenario.
A nearby security officer, performing their duties on the property, noticed the escalating tension and attempted to intervene to ensure the safety of the driver and protect the property. However, the situation turned violent when the suspect turned his aggression toward the officer. The security guard assaulted during the intervention sustained injuries, though police have not specified the severity of the medical condition following the attack.

Public Appeal for Evidence
Detective Barr is leading the search for the assailant and is specifically looking for digital evidence that could help identify the man before he can strike again. Because the incident took place in a busy downtown area, police are hopeful that:
-
Dash Cam Footage: Drivers who were entering or exiting the Mary and King Street area around 10:00 p.m. on March 19 may have captured the suspect on camera.
-
Surveillance Video: Nearby businesses or residents with security systems facing the parking structure are encouraged to review their footage.
-
Witness Testimony: Anyone who saw the security guard assaulted or observed the initial dispute with the exiting vehicle is asked to provide a statement.
