The Scugog Fire Department Sensory Support Kits initiative is helping make emergency response more inclusive by equipping firefighters with specialized resources to better support individuals with sensory sensitivities during emergencies. The program reflects the department’s commitment to providing compassionate, person-centred care while ensuring every resident receives the support they need during stressful situations.
Scugog Fire Chief Mike Matthews emphasized that no two emergencies are the same and that every individual has unique needs. He explained that the newly introduced Scugog Fire Department Sensory Support Kits will help firefighters respond more effectively by reducing anxiety and creating a calmer environment for people with sensory sensitivities, including those with autism and other developmental or cognitive conditions. By using these kits, firefighters can provide more personalized assistance that improves both communication and comfort during emergency responses.
The sensory support kits contain tools specifically selected to help individuals remain calm and feel secure during emergencies. These resources are designed to reduce sensory overload, improve communication between firefighters and residents, and make emergency situations less overwhelming for affected individuals and their families. The initiative supports a more inclusive emergency response system that recognizes the diverse needs of the community.
In addition to introducing the kits, the Scugog Fire Department is encouraging residents with disabilities or special needs who may require additional assistance during emergencies to complete a Person(s) Requiring Assistance Form. This voluntary program allows firefighters to access important information before responding to an emergency, helping them better understand an individual’s specific needs and prepare appropriate support in advance. The department believes this proactive approach will improve safety and response efficiency while giving families greater peace of mind.
The program was made possible through funding provided by North City Insurance Brokers of Woodbridge. It was coordinated by the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council in partnership with Autism Canada, organizations that continue to promote inclusive and accessible emergency services across Ontario. Their collaboration ensures fire departments have the resources needed to better serve residents with sensory sensitivities and disabilities.
