The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has completed the fifth week of its 2025 Festive RIDE program, reporting lower enforcement totals across nearly all categories compared to the same period last year.
During the week, officers stopped more than 1,500 vehicles, a notable decrease from over 2,300 vehicles in 2024. As a result of the checks, 14 drivers were charged with impaired driving–related offences, police said.
DRPS released the following enforcement statistics, with 2024 week five totals shown in brackets for comparison:
- Vehicles stopped: 1,542 (2,323)
- Roadside breath tests administered: 95 (218)
- Three-day licence suspensions for “warn” readings: 6 (15)
- Novice driver licence suspensions (3, 7, or 30 days): 3 (3)
- Drivers charged with impaired driving offences: 14 (21)
- Total impaired / exceed / refuse charges laid: 21 (31)
- Other Criminal Code charges: 11 (18)
- Highway Traffic Act offences: 140 (171)
- Drug-related offences: 1 (2)
This week’s enforcement efforts were carried out in partnership with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Durham, the Ontario Provincial Police Highway Safety Division, and DRPS auxiliary constables.
Police also thanked residents who contacted authorities after suspecting impaired drivers. DRPS noted that many of these calls directly resulted in charges and the removal of impaired drivers from local roads, highlighting the importance of community involvement in roadway safety.
