A Port Perry Montreal charity run saw local resident JP Horgan complete 590 kilometres over 14 consecutive days while raising thousands of dollars for Community Care Durham.

Horgan completed the endurance challenge in July, effectively running a marathon every day for two weeks as he travelled east from Port Perry toward Montreal.

The accomplishment represents a dramatic change for Horgan, who has spoken publicly about previously struggling with chronic pain and mobility problems.

His goal was not only to test his own physical limits but also to demonstrate what people can accomplish while raising support for programs serving residents across Durham Region.

Port Perry Montreal Charity Run Covers 590 Kilometres

Horgan’s original plan called for a 555-kilometre journey.

By the time he completed the challenge, however, the final distance had reached approximately 590 kilometres.

Community Care Durham described the accomplishment as 14 marathons in 14 days.

Horgan began his daily runs early in the morning and typically covered approximately the distance of a full marathon before stopping for the day.

His family travelled with him and provided support along the route, including water, food, clothing and fresh running shoes.

The journey eventually brought Horgan and his family to the Montreal area, where he completed the endurance challenge.

Journey Follows Years of Chronic Pain

The achievement carries additional significance because of Horgan’s history with chronic pain.

Horgan has said he was previously treated for a spinal schwannoma, a generally benign tumour involving nerves around the spine, and at one point relied on mobility assistance while dealing with severe pain.

He gradually began rebuilding his physical strength and later took up endurance running.

Horgan has also volunteered with Community Care Durham, including work connected to support for people dealing with anxiety, depression and chronic pain.

His experiences helped inspire the fundraising run.

For Horgan, completing such a demanding challenge was intended to demonstrate that circumstances can change dramatically and that people may be capable of more than they initially believe.

Thousands Raised for Community Care Durham

The run is also serving as a fundraiser for Community Care Durham.

The organization provides programs and services for residents across Durham Region, including Meals on Wheels, accessible transportation, adult day programs, caregiver support, health and wellness programming and mental-health services.

Horgan’s online fundraising campaign remained active after he completed the running portion of the challenge.

The campaign is scheduled to remain open until September 10, with a cheque presentation to Community Care Durham planned for September 14.

Horgan has said the response from people along the route and supporters online became one of the most memorable parts of his journey.

Drivers honked in support, people offered water and refreshments, and some joined him for portions of the run.

Port Perry Runner Hopes Journey Inspires Others

Beyond fundraising, Horgan says the challenge was intended to encourage people dealing with physical or mental-health difficulties.

His progression from significant mobility challenges to completing 590 kilometres in two weeks formed the central message of the journey.

For Community Care Durham, the fundraising campaign provides additional support for programs used by individuals and families throughout the region.

And for Horgan, crossing the finish line after 14 consecutive marathon-distance days offered proof of the message behind his challenge: personal limits may extend much further than they initially appear.
