The City of Pickering has announced that it will spend $3.3 million to replace the aging roof of the Dunbarton Indoor Pool, which has served the community for over 55 years. The project will be funded through revenue generated from the Pickering Casino Resort, a move that reflects the city’s commitment to maintaining and improving its public facilities.
The pool, which is located at Dunbarton High School, has become a key resource for local residents, particularly for the Pickering Masters Swim Club. However, the roof, originally built in 1971, has reached the end of its lifespan and is in need of significant repair. The $3,349,532 project cost will cover the expenses of replacing the roof, ensuring the continued operation of the facility for years to come.
The city has contracted Triumph Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc. to carry out the work, with construction slated to begin in July 2026. The project is expected to be completed by October 2026, just in time for the cooler months.
While the renovations are ongoing, there will be some disruption to the swim programs at the Dunbarton Indoor Pool. Learn-to-swim programs will be relocated to the Chestnut Hill Developments Community Centre to accommodate the changes. As a result, some lane swim times will be canceled to make room for these programs. However, the city aims to minimize the inconvenience to local residents and swimmers during the construction period.
The Dunbarton Indoor Pool is an essential part of the community, providing recreational opportunities and swim lessons for residents of all ages. The pool is owned by the city but is situated on the grounds of Dunbarton High School, further emphasizing its importance to both the community and local schools.
Gerhard Wolfel, a 78-year-old member of the Pickering Masters Swim Club, is just one of the many regulars who have enjoyed the facility over the years. Wolfel, who has dived into the pool during practice sessions, is a testament to the long-standing tradition of swimming and fitness in the area. The pool has hosted countless swimmers and athletes, and its roof replacement will ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the facility.
The funding for this project comes from the Pickering Casino Resort, which has generated significant revenue for the city since its opening. The casino’s revenue has provided the city with the necessary funds to invest in local infrastructure, ensuring that public services and amenities are well-maintained and updated for the benefit of residents.
This roof replacement is part of a larger effort by the City of Pickering to enhance the quality of life for its residents and ensure that public facilities are in top condition. As the project moves forward, the city will continue to prioritize the needs of its growing population, with plans to invest in more community-focused initiatives in the future.
The Dunbarton Indoor Pool is expected to continue serving the community long after the roof replacement is completed, offering a safe, reliable, and well-maintained space for residents to enjoy swimming, fitness, and recreation.
