Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) investigators and Pickering Fire Services are currently on the hunt for at least two suspects following a brazen Pickering Strip Plaza Arson 2026 early Thursday morning. Emergency crews were dispatched to the commercial plaza located at Kingston Road and Rougemount Drive at approximately 12:10 a.m. after reports of a business “engulfed in flames.” While the targeted convenience store suffered extensive damage, a rapid response by fire crews prevented the blaze from spreading to the rest of the shopping center.

The Incident and Emergency Response

The Pickering Strip Plaza Arson 2026 began shortly after midnight on May 14.

  • Rapid Containment: Pickering Fire crews arrived within minutes and utilized multiple water hoses to extinguish the blaze. Their quick action was credited with containing the fire to a single commercial unit, protecting several neighboring businesses.

  • No Injuries: Police have confirmed that no one was inside the unit at the time and no injuries have been reported to civilians or first responders.

  • Suspicious Activity: Investigators have officially designated the fire as an arson after gathering evidence at the scene and reviewing initial witness statements.

Suspect and Vehicle Descriptions

Witnesses at the scene of the Pickering Strip Plaza Arson 2026 provided police with key details regarding the suspects:

  • The Escape: Immediately after the fire started, two individuals were seen fleeing the parking lot in a dark-coloured sedan.

  • The Suspects: While specific physical descriptions are still being refined from surveillance footage, the suspects were seen leaving the area at a high rate of speed, headed toward the Kingston Road corridor.

A Pattern of Arson in Pickering

The Pickering Strip Plaza Arson 2026 is the latest in a troubling string of suspicious fires in the city this month. Just nine days ago, DRPS investigated an arson that damaged three homes under construction in another part of Pickering. While police have not yet officially linked the plaza fire to the residential construction site arsons, the West Division Criminal Investigations Branch is looking for commonalities in suspect behavior and vehicle types.

Community Appeal for Evidence

Police are urging the public to assist in the Pickering Strip Plaza Arson 2026 investigation. Specifically, they are looking for:

  1. Dashcam Footage: Anyone driving on Kingston Road or Rougemount Drive between 11:30 p.m. Wednesday and 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

  2. Surveillance Video: Local residents or business owners in the West Shore and Rougemount neighborhoods are asked to check their cameras for a dark sedan.

  3. Witnesses: Anyone who noticed suspicious individuals loitering in the plaza parking lot prior to the fire.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the West Division Criminal Investigations Branch at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1905, or submit an anonymous tip via Durham Regional Crime Stoppers.
