A Pickering road salt shortage is prompting changes to winter maintenance operations as the city works to conserve supplies following several heavy snowfalls earlier than usual this season.
City officials say Pickering maintains a reserve of road salt, but crews must now use it carefully to ensure the supply lasts through the remainder of the winter while additional sources are explored. Many municipalities across Ontario are facing similar shortages due to increased demand.
As part of conservation efforts, winter maintenance operations will be adjusted temporarily. Plowing will continue once approximately five centimetres of snow has accumulated, with priority given to major roads and emergency routes during active snowfall.
However, instead of applying salt early in a storm, crews may wait until conditions allow the material to be used more effectively. Post-storm cleanup will still take place following snowfall events.
In some areas, a blend of salt, sand, or other de-icing materials will be used to improve traction and help extend existing salt supplies. Residents may notice more sand on sidewalks and roads as a result.
The City of Pickering says these measures reflect similar approaches being used across Ontario and that winter operations will continue to be adjusted based on weather conditions, road safety needs, and available materials.
