Pickering man wanted for fraud is the key issue in a case involving Ovidiu-Ionut Dumitru, a 36-year-old man from Romania, who is accused of using fraudulent documents to purchase a vehicle in Pickering. The incident, which took place in July 2025, has led to a police investigation into the sale of a 2025 Hyundai Elantra sedan, which was obtained under false pretenses.
According to the police, Dumitru purchased the car using counterfeit documents, which allowed him to secure the vehicle without making any payments. After the fraudulent purchase, the car was exported to the Netherlands. Dumitru fled the country within a week of the purchase, leaving behind a trail of deceit and a vehicle that was no longer in Canada.
Authorities are seeking Dumitru for multiple charges, including fraud over $5,000, making a false statement to procure credit, and disposal of property to avoid creditors. However, it’s important to note that the allegations have yet to be proven in court, and Dumitru remains a fugitive.
The police urge anyone with information about Dumitru’s whereabouts or this case to come forward. Information can be directed to D/Cst. Taylor of the Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5283. Individuals who wish to remain anonymous can submit tips to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at Durham Crime Stoppers, where they may be eligible for a cash reward.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in preventing fraud. As fraudsters continue to exploit loopholes and manipulate systems, businesses and consumers alike must stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from fraudulent schemes.
The ongoing search for Dumitru highlights the increasing global reach of criminal activity. Fraud cases like this one, where individuals take advantage of credit systems and financial institutions, underscore the need for enhanced security measures and international cooperation in addressing financial crimes.
