An Oshawa Second Marsh cleanup is inviting community volunteers to help remove litter from one of the Greater Toronto Area’s largest remaining coastal wetlands this weekend.
Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter is expected to join the cleanup. DurhamRegion.com reports it will be his final mayor’s cleanup because he is not seeking re-election in the 2026 municipal election.
Organizers will provide volunteers with gloves, maps and garbage bags. Participants are encouraged to bring a litter reacher or tongs to reduce bending and back strain while collecting waste.
Wetland supports birds and fish
Second Marsh is an ecologically significant Lake Ontario coastal wetland in southeast Oshawa. The marsh provides habitat for numerous fish species and is an important stopover for migratory birds.
Community cleanups help remove plastics and other discarded material before it enters the wetland and surrounding waterways. Volunteers should dress for outdoor conditions, wear sturdy footwear and follow instructions for handling sharp or hazardous items.
