A dramatic Oshawa Centre jewelry store robbery on Sunday afternoon ended with multiple arrests after citizens and mall security stepped in to help detain suspects, highlighting a rare and intense scene at one of Durham Region’s busiest shopping destinations.
Durham Regional Police responded to reports of an armed robbery at Bellagio Jewellers II inside the Oshawa Centre just before 4:00 p.m. According to investigators, four male suspects entered the store, where they allegedly used bear spray to incapacitate staff and shoppers before smashing display cases and stealing jewelry. A fifth suspect remained outside in a waiting vehicle, ready to assist in the escape.
The situation escalated quickly as the suspects attempted to flee the mall before police arrived. However, in a surprising turn of events, two suspects were confronted and restrained inside the mall by bystanders and security personnel, preventing their escape. This citizen-assisted takedown played a crucial role in stopping the robbery from unfolding further.
Meanwhile, the remaining three suspects fled the scene in a vehicle. Their escape was short-lived, as they were soon involved in a minor collision at Stevenson Road North and King Street West. Following the crash, the suspects attempted to escape on foot but were quickly tracked down and arrested with the assistance of the DRPS K-9 Unit.
Emergency responders attended the scene, and minor injuries were reported due to exposure to bear spray. Oshawa Fire Services were also called in to ventilate the mall and ensure public safety following the incident.
Police have confirmed that five individuals are now in custody, including three adults and two youth suspects, all facing multiple serious charges. Among those charged is Coulton Peters-McComb, 22, of Barrie, who faces charges including robbery, possession of a prohibited weapon, conspiracy, and drug-related offences. Romario Abraham, 18, of Mississauga, and Ryan MacPhail, 40, of no fixed address, are also facing multiple charges related to the robbery.
In addition, a 15-year-old from Mississauga and a 17-year-old from Brampton have been charged under the Youth Criminal Justice Act with offences including robbery, disguise with intent, and possession of stolen property. Police noted that one of the youth suspects is also charged with administering a noxious substance, referring to the use of bear spray during the robbery.
Authorities also confirmed that one of the adult suspects was already under weapons prohibition conditions at the time of arrest, raising further concerns about repeat offenders and public safety.
The Oshawa Centre jewelry store robbery has sparked concern among shoppers and residents, particularly given the involvement of bear spray and multiple suspects in a busy public space. However, police credited the quick actions of citizens and security staff for helping to bring the situation under control before it could escalate further.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police are reviewing evidence, including video footage from the scene. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Durham Regional Police or Crime Stoppers.
