Ontario winter storm disruptions are causing widespread cancellations and closures across the Greater Toronto Area, including parts of Durham Region, as a powerful winter storm continues to batter southern Ontario.
Environment Canada issued winter storm warnings for multiple GTA communities, warning that 30 to 50 centimetres of snow could fall in Toronto, Mississauga, Burlington, and Pickering. Some areas could see snowfall totals exceeding 60 centimetres, accompanied by strong winds and dangerously low visibility.
As a result of the Ontario winter storm disruptions, several school boards have closed all schools and facilities, including the Durham District School Board, Toronto District School Board, and Peel District School Boards.
Air travel has also been significantly affected. Hundreds of flights at Toronto Pearson International Airport have been delayed or cancelled, with travellers urged to check flight status before heading to the airport.
Municipal officials across the region are advising residents to avoid non-essential travel as snowplows continue operating around the clock. Transit services have also been disrupted, with detours and partial service suspensions reported across major routes.
Weather officials warn that hazardous conditions may continue as lake-effect snow shifts across southern Ontario. Residents are advised to stay indoors where possible and take precautions against extreme cold and heavy snowfall.
