Ontario Price Increase Expected by One Third Businesses

An Ontario price increase could soon affect consumers as many businesses across the province prepare to raise prices following new inflation data.

According to a recent survey conducted by Merchant Growth, roughly one in three Ontario businesses plans to raise prices within the next six months as companies struggle with increasing costs.

The survey found that the rising Ontario price increase pressure is largely driven by inflation and higher operating expenses. Even businesses that previously avoided passing additional costs on to customers are now reconsidering their strategy.

Inflation has recently risen to 1.8 percent, adding further strain on companies already dealing with higher costs for supplies, transportation, and services.

Merchant Growth’s research suggests that many small businesses have tried to absorb these expenses over the past several years, often by cutting internal costs or reducing profit margins. However, those options are becoming increasingly limited.

Among the 53 percent of businesses that chose not to raise prices in previous years, approximately 37 percent now say they have little choice but to increase prices in order to remain financially stable.

David Gens, CEO of Merchant Growth, said price increases are sometimes the only remaining option for businesses trying to survive the current economic conditions.

“After months of absorbing those pressures and cutting back where they can, pricing is often one of the few tools left to keep the business stable,” Gens explained.

The Ontario price increase trend may also be influenced by international trade pressures. About 50 percent of surveyed businesses said tariffs have significantly affected their ability to grow profits.

In response to these economic challenges, many companies are making additional adjustments to their operations. Around 37 percent of businesses surveyed reported that they are pausing hiring plans as they attempt to manage rising costs.

Economic analysts say the months ahead could remain challenging for entrepreneurs across the province.

Merchant Growth predicts a cautious outlook for small businesses heading into the spring season, with many owners turning to short-term financing or personal credit to manage expenses during slower periods.

The expected Ontario price increase across many sectors may soon be felt by consumers as businesses adjust to ongoing economic pressures.
