After a stretch of wintry weather across southern Ontario, milder temperatures are expected to arrive later this week, bringing rain and the potential for snowmelt across Durham Region.
According to Environment Canada, rain is forecast to move into the Greater Toronto Area, including Durham Region, Thursday night, with overnight lows expected to remain above freezing.
By Friday, temperatures in Durham Region are forecast to reach around 9°C, while nearby areas such as Toronto, Halton, Peel, Hamilton, and Niagara could see highs between 10°C and 11°C. The warmer air will be accompanied by cloudy skies and periods of rain, which are expected to melt some of the existing snow cover.
Environment Canada says the milder conditions will be short-lived. By Saturday, temperatures are expected to drop sharply, with highs falling to between 2°C and 3°C in the GTA and Durham Region. Rain is expected to continue into the weekend before colder air returns.
By Sunday, daytime highs are forecast to fall below freezing once again across much of southern Ontario.
Seasonal norms for this time of year typically see daytime highs between –1°C and –2°C, with overnight lows ranging from –8°C to –10°C.
Residents are advised to remain cautious as melting snow and rainfall may lead to wet or slippery conditions before temperatures drop again.
