Residents across the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding communities should prepare for wet and unsettled conditions as the March 10 weather thunderstorm risk southern Ontario forecast brings rain and possible storms to the region.

According to Environment Canada, a low-pressure system moving through southern Ontario could bring 10 to 15 millimetres of rain along with the possibility of thunderstorms late Tuesday and overnight.

Environment Canada says there will be a 40 per cent chance of showers and drizzle through the afternoon, affecting several cities including Oshawa, Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton and the Niagara region.

Temperatures are expected to rise gradually during the day, with daytime highs reaching around 11°C in parts of the Greater Toronto Area.

The UV index is expected to reach 3, which Environment Canada classifies as moderate.

Rain and Thunderstorm Risk Overnight

Weather conditions are expected to become more active later in the evening as a special weather statement remains in effect for parts of southern Ontario.

The approaching low-pressure system could trigger more widespread rainfall overnight, along with the risk of thunderstorms.

Environment Canada says the March 10 weather thunderstorm risk southern Ontario forecast includes 10 to 15 millimetres of rainfall, though some areas could see higher totals if thunderstorms develop.

Rain showers are expected to intensify around midnight, while winds may increase across the region.

Wind gusts could reach up to 40 kilometres per hour, which may create reduced visibility during heavier rainfall periods.

Temperatures will cool overnight, with the overnight low expected to drop to around 3°C.

Potential for Heavier Rainfall

While most areas will likely receive moderate rainfall amounts, meteorologists say localized thunderstorms could produce heavier rainfall totals.

In areas where thunderstorms develop, rainfall could reach up to 40 millimetres, though those higher amounts are expected to be isolated.

Heavy rain combined with gusty winds may also create slippery road conditions, particularly during the late evening and overnight hours.

Drivers are encouraged to exercise caution and allow extra travel time during periods of heavier rain.

Spring Weather Pattern Developing

The March 10 weather thunderstorm risk southern Ontario forecast reflects the type of changing weather patterns often seen during the transition from winter to spring.

Low-pressure systems moving across the region frequently bring rapid shifts between sunshine, rain and storms during early March.

Meteorologists say residents should expect continued variability in temperatures and weather conditions throughout the coming weeks as spring approaches.

For now, residents across Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Area should be prepared for a cloudy and rainy Tuesday with the possibility of thunderstorms overnight.

Environment Canada continues to monitor the system and will provide updates if weather warnings become necessary.
