Kops Records Oshawa Closure Honours Music Champion

The Kops Records Oshawa closure has prompted an emotional farewell to store manager Will McGuirk, a longtime supporter of local musicians and downtown cultural life. Customers, artists and friends gathered at the King Street shop during its final days to thank McGuirk for turning a record store into a welcoming meeting place for Durham Region’s music community.

Kops ended operations at its Oshawa location after years of financial pressure. McGuirk said the decision came down to economics, explaining that the store had never fully recovered from the effects of the pandemic. While the company’s two Toronto locations remained active, the Oshawa branch continued to lose money.

Record Store Became a Downtown Music Hub

Kops first opened in Oshawa in 2015 at Simcoe and John streets. McGuirk joined the business three years later and helped establish the shop as more than a place to purchase vinyl. Musicians, collectors, promoters and music fans regularly visited to exchange recommendations, discuss upcoming performances and build new connections.

The store moved to King Street in spring 2023, placing it near several important downtown venues. The Biltmore Theatre and Atria Bar were across the street, the Regent Theatre was next door, and the Tribute Communities Centre was only a few blocks away. The later arrival of the BOND|ST Event Centre further strengthened the area’s identity as a live-music destination.

McGuirk continued creating opportunities for performers even after the move to a smaller space. Bands played inside the front of the store, and emerging artists were featured through informal showcases. The shop became known as a place where young musicians could be heard, encouraged and introduced to others in the local industry.

Musicians Thank Will McGuirk

Local musician Derek Lyon described McGuirk as a central source of information and advocacy for Durham’s music scene. Lyon said Kops provided a space where musicians could meet, form friendships and learn what was happening across the city.

Radio promoter Presley Overgoor also recalled how record stores created lasting memories and encouraged discovery. She said McGuirk challenged young creators to think more deeply about their work and helped demonstrate that the real value of a record shop came from the people and conversations inside it.

Many other customers shared farewell messages online, thanking McGuirk and Kops for supporting vinyl culture and local artists. The strong response reflected the role the shop played as a clubhouse, classroom and informal cultural centre rather than simply a retail business.

McGuirk’s contribution was formally recognized in 2025 when he received the Music Industry Leader of the Year honour at the DREAMS! Music Awards in Oshawa. During his acceptance remarks, he urged municipalities, event organizers and residents to invest in young creatives, book them for civic events and attend their performances.

Farewell Does Not End Local Advocacy

Although the Kops Records Oshawa closure marks the end of the downtown shop, McGuirk has made it clear that he is not leaving the city’s music scene. After recently celebrating his 60th birthday, he plans to remain involved with local musicians and projects that strengthen downtown Oshawa.

McGuirk said he was proud to have helped create a place where people felt comfortable saying yes to new ideas, performances and connections. He also thanked the Koppel family for supporting the vision of operating the store as a cultural hub.

The closure leaves downtown Oshawa without one of its most recognizable gathering spaces for vinyl collectors and performers. However, the relationships built through Kops are expected to continue through the venues, artists, businesses and supporters that helped shape the surrounding music district.

The Kops Records Oshawa closure is therefore both an ending and a reminder of what one small cultural business can contribute to a city. McGuirk’s next plans remain undecided, but his influence on Oshawa’s musicians, audiences and downtown supporters is likely to remain visible for years.
