Durham police are investigating after a gun safe containing several firearms was stolen during a daytime break-in at a rural home in Brock Township last week, raising serious public safety concerns in north Durham Region.
According to Durham Regional Police, the incident occurred near Thorah Concession Road 4 and Thorah Side Road, east of Beaverton. The homeowner reportedly left the residence in the early morning hours on Tuesday, February 17. When the resident returned at approximately 5 p.m., they discovered their front door open and the gun safe missing from inside the home.
Police say the gun safe with firearms inside was taken sometime between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Investigators have not disclosed the exact number or types of firearms that were stored in the safe, but confirmed that multiple guns were secured inside at the time of the theft. Authorities are treating the incident as a serious criminal matter due to the risks associated with stolen firearms potentially entering illegal circulation.
Investigators are now working to determine how the suspects gained access to the property and how they managed to remove the safe. Gun safes are typically heavy and designed to prevent theft, leading police to believe more than one suspect may have been involved or that a vehicle was used to transport the safe away from the rural property.
Officers from the North Division Criminal Investigations Branch are leading the case. Police are canvassing the surrounding area and speaking with nearby residents in hopes of identifying suspicious activity during the timeframe of the break-in. Rural areas can sometimes present investigative challenges due to greater distances between homes and fewer witnesses, making community cooperation especially important.
Durham police are urging anyone who was travelling in the area on February 17 between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. to review cell phone video, dash cam recordings or home surveillance footage. Even seemingly minor details — such as an unfamiliar pickup truck parked on the roadside, a trailer in the area or individuals walking near the property — could provide valuable leads.
The theft of a gun safe with firearms inside is considered particularly concerning because stolen firearms may be used in future criminal activity. Police are prioritizing efforts to recover the weapons and prevent them from being unlawfully distributed.
Authorities are also reminding firearm owners to ensure proper storage and to report suspicious activity immediately. While firearms in Canada are subject to strict storage regulations, break-ins targeting gun safes remain a concern, particularly in rural communities.
Anyone with information about the stolen gun safe with firearms inside is asked to contact the North Division Criminal Investigations Branch at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1505. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online, and tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward.
The investigation remains ongoing as police work to identify the suspects, recover the stolen firearms and ensure public safety across Brock Township and Durham Region
