Environment Canada is warning that parts of southern Ontario could experience freezing rain this weekend, potentially leading to icy surfaces and hazardous travel conditions.
According to the national weather agency, freezing rain may develop late Saturday afternoon or evening in areas identified as Location B on its forecast map and could persist into Sunday morning. Ice accumulation is currently estimated to range between 1 and 5 millimetres, although officials note that the forecast remains uncertain.
Environment Canada cautions that precipitation may vary by location, with freezing rain potentially mixing with rain, ice pellets, or snow depending on local conditions.
In areas further north, marked as Location A, snowfall is expected to begin Saturday evening and continue into Sunday. Snowfall totals could reach 5 to 15 centimetres, accompanied by reduced visibility due to blowing snow and wind gusts of up to 50 km/h.
Forecasters emphasize that confidence in both ice and snowfall amounts remains low, as the exact track of the weather system is still unclear.
Looking ahead to Sunday, strong westerly or southwesterly winds—with gusts reaching up to 80 km/h—are expected along the eastern shores of Lake Huron, the northern shores of Lake Erie, and the northeastern shores of Lake Ontario.
Residents are advised to monitor local forecasts and prepare for potentially changing and hazardous weather conditions.
