Environment Canada is urging residents across Durham Region to use extreme caution while walking or driving as freezing rain continues into Wednesday, creating hazardous conditions.

The weather agency warns that icy surfaces may be difficult to detect, increasing the risk of slips, falls, and vehicle collisions. Several hours of freezing rain are expected, with ice accretion ranging from 1 to 5 millimetres across the region.

Areas closer to the Lake Ontario shoreline may experience minimal ice buildup. However, conditions are expected to worsen as freezing rain transitions to heavy snow while a low-pressure system moves through southern Ontario.

Environment Canada says localized snowfall rates of 2 to 5 centimetres per hour are possible, leading to reduced visibility and difficult travel conditions. Roads and walkways are expected to become increasingly hazardous due to accumulating snow and ice.

Motorists are advised to turn on headlights, reduce speed, and maintain a safe following distance. Pedestrians are encouraged to exercise caution when travelling outdoors.

Residents are urged to monitor weather updates and adjust travel plans as conditions evolve.
