Durham Region and other parts of Southern Ontario are set to experience variable and potentially hazardous weather conditions on Thursday, February 19. According to Environment Canada, this day will bring cloudy skies, rain, and the possibility of freezing drizzle, especially in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), which includes Durham Region.
The morning will begin with cloudy skies across Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, and Pickering, as well as Oshawa in Durham. Early forecasts indicate a 30% chance of showers for areas like Hamilton and the Niagara Falls region, while the rest of the GTA, including Durham Region, will face a greater risk of freezing drizzle as temperatures remain near the freezing point.
By the afternoon, the weather in much of the GTA, including Durham, will become more concerning. Environment Canada has issued a warning for freezing drizzle, which could make roads slippery and driving conditions treacherous. With temperatures hovering just above freezing, roads and sidewalks will be at risk of becoming icy, particularly in the late afternoon and evening hours.
In Mississauga, the high will be around 1°C, and there will be a continued chance of freezing drizzle. This type of weather, combined with gusty winds reaching up to 50 km/h, will make conditions more uncomfortable for those venturing outdoors. It is essential to take precautions, especially on untreated roads, where ice may form rapidly.
As the evening progresses, the risk of rain or showers increases across the GTA, and a 60% chance of freezing drizzle will persist. In addition, winds will continue to gust at 50 km/h. With temperatures dipping slightly overnight, those in Durham Region, including Oshawa and Pickering, could face dangerous driving conditions late in the day and into the night.
Looking ahead to Friday, February 20, the unsettled weather is expected to continue, with periods of rain and possibly snow throughout the day. While the high will remain around 1°C in Mississauga, the weather agency warns of another 60% chance of snow or rain in the evening, with temperatures dipping to a low of -1°C. As the weather becomes colder, freezing rain remains a possibility, and residents in the GTA and Durham Region should stay prepared for icy conditions.
The risk of freezing drizzle and snow will not only affect roadways but may also impact other aspects of daily life, such as outdoor activities and commuting. Those planning to travel or spend time outdoors should take extra care, wearing appropriate clothing and footwear to prevent slips and falls.
It is recommended that residents stay updated on weather advisories and adjust their travel plans if necessary. For Durham Region residents, particularly those in Oshawa and Pickering, the weather will pose challenges, and motorists should ensure their vehicles are winter-ready.
As travel to and from work or school is expected to be slower due to the inclement weather, people should allocate extra time for their journeys. Additionally, parents and caregivers in Durham and other GTA areas should monitor school updates in case of any weather-related closures.
