Durham Weather Aug. 6: Storm Risk and Humid Heat

Durham Weather Aug. 6 will bring fog patches, hot and humid conditions, afternoon showers and a risk of thunderstorms across Oshawa and other parts of Durham Region.

Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts increasing cloudiness through Thursday morning, with localized fog possible in Oshawa and surrounding communities. The fog is expected to dissipate as temperatures rise, but drivers may encounter reduced visibility during the morning commute.

The daytime high is expected to reach approximately 30 C. Humidity could make conditions feel closer to 38 C, creating uncomfortable and potentially stressful conditions for people spending long periods outdoors.

Afternoon showers and thunderstorms possible

There is a 40 per cent chance of showers Thursday afternoon, along with a risk of thunderstorms across southern Ontario.

A southwest wind near 20 kilometres per hour could produce gusts of approximately 40 kilometres per hour. Thunderstorms may also bring brief downpours, sudden visibility reductions and stronger localized wind gusts.

Some areas of southern Ontario could experience severe thunderstorms capable of producing wind gusts near 100 kilometres per hour and hail approximately the size of ping-pong balls. However, those severe conditions are not guaranteed for Durham Region.

Residents should monitor official Environment Canada alerts throughout the day because thunderstorm watches and warnings can be issued quickly as storms develop.

At the time of the latest forecast, Oshawa had no active weather alerts.

Humidex and UV precautions

The combination of high temperatures and humidity may increase the risk of heat-related illness.

People working or exercising outdoors should drink water regularly, take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas and avoid unnecessary strenuous activity during the hottest part of the afternoon.

Children, older adults and people with health conditions may be more vulnerable to prolonged heat.

The UV index is forecast to reach 9, which Environment Canada classifies as very high. Residents should use sunscreen, wear protective clothing and limit direct sun exposure around midday.

Thursday night remains unsettled

Thursday night is expected to remain mainly cloudy, with a 40 per cent chance of showers early in the evening and a continuing thunderstorm risk.

Fog patches may redevelop overnight. Winds could continue gusting near 40 kilometres per hour before easing later in the night.

The overnight low is expected to be around 19 C to 21 C, depending on the location.

The source article incorrectly refers to this period as Tuesday night. The forecast concerns Thursday night, August 6.

More showers possible Friday and Saturday

Friday is expected to remain cloudy and humid, with a chance of additional showers or isolated thunderstorms. Oshawa’s forecast calls for temperatures near 25 C, although conditions may vary elsewhere across southern Ontario.

Saturday may bring another round of showers and thunderstorms, with temperatures near 28 C. Current forecasts suggest Sunday should become partly sunny, with a high near 27 C.

Weekend conditions remain subject to change as weather systems move across the province.

Residents urged to remain weather-aware

During the Durham Weather Aug. 6 forecast period, drivers should be prepared for fog, wet roads and sudden reductions in visibility.

Anyone outdoors should move inside when thunder is heard. A vehicle or substantial enclosed building provides safer shelter than tents, gazebos or open structures.

Residents should check Environment Canada forecasts, radar and alerts before travelling or attending outdoor events, particularly during the afternoon and evening when storms are most likely.
