A major winter system is moving into Ontario, prompting a Durham Region WEATHER ALERT: Up to 15 cm of snow and freezing rain warnings in effect for surrounding areas.
Environment Canada has issued warnings for parts of southern Ontario, including Pickering, Oshawa, Uxbridge and both Northern and Southern Durham Region, as hazardous winter conditions are expected to intensify Tuesday night into Wednesday.
Snowfall amounts between 5 and 15 cm are possible, along with several hours of freezing rain. Ice accumulation of 2 to 5 mm may develop, creating slippery and dangerous conditions on roads, sidewalks and driveways.
Wind gusts could reach up to 50 km/h, leading to reduced visibility in blowing snow. Officials warn that travel delays are likely, and some road closures may occur.
The weather system could also result in localized power outages and minor property damage due to ice buildup.
Residents across Durham Region are encouraged to:
-
Allow extra travel time
-
Avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm conditions
-
Monitor Environment Canada updates
-
Prepare for potential power disruptions
Environment Canada notes that snowfall and freezing rain amounts may shift depending on the storm track, and warnings could be updated as conditions evolve.
