Durham Region Police Investigate Four Separate Incidents in Single Night

A particularly active night for Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) saw officers responding to four separate incidents across three municipalities, ranging from firearms-related calls to suspicious fires. The series of events, all occurring Saturday, has prompted multiple investigations as authorities work to piece together what happened in each case.

Shooting at Bowmanville Residence

In Bowmanville, police responded to reports of gunfire at a residential property near the intersection of Mann Street and Tucker Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered evidence that a weapon had been discharged at the residence. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in connection with the shooting. The circumstances surrounding the incident, including any potential connections between the shooter and the occupants of the home, remain under active investigation. DRPS is seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area during the evening hours.

Arson Arrest in Oshawa

Meanwhile, in Oshawa, a 57-year-old male was taken into custody following an arson incident in the Ortona Avenue and Bloor Street East area. Police arrived to find evidence of intentional fire-setting at a residential location. The suspect, whose identity has not been released pending formal charges, faces multiple arson-related offenses. The investigation is examining possible motives and whether the incident was targeted or random. No other individuals were reported injured in connection with the Oshawa arson, though property damage is being assessed.

Suspicious Fire in Pickering

Pickering emergency crews and police were dispatched to a residential fire on Kerrydale Avenue near Marchington Square. The blaze, deemed suspicious by investigators, required fire department intervention to bring under control. Like the Bowmanville shooting, no injuries were reported in this incident. However, the suspicious nature of the fire has triggered a joint investigation between police and fire marshals to determine the cause and origin of the flames. Residents in the area are being asked to report any unusual activity observed in the vicinity during the time of the fire.

Home Invasion in Ajax

Perhaps the most concerning incident of the night occurred in Ajax, where three suspects allegedly forced their way into a home on Cranston Avenue near Carpendale Crescent. The intruders were reportedly armed with firearms during the invasion. Police confirmed that minor injuries were sustained during the confrontation, though the extent and nature of those injuries have not been detailed. A search for the three suspects is underway, with DRPS warning the public that the individuals should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information about the home invasion is urged to contact police immediately.

Ongoing Investigations

The four separate incidents have stretched DRPS resources thin, with specialized units including the Major Crime Unit, Forensic Identification Services, and Criminal Investigation Bureau all deployed across the region. Police are emphasizing that while these incidents occurred on the same night, there is currently no evidence suggesting they are connected. Each investigation is being treated as an independent case. DRPS is asking anyone with dashcam footage, surveillance video, or eyewitness accounts of any of these incidents to come forward. The string of serious crimes highlights the varied challenges facing law enforcement in maintaining public safety across Durham’s diverse communities.
