Durham Region has been officially recognized as a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) by the Share the Road Cycling Coalition, marking a major step forward in the region’s commitment to active and sustainable transportation.
According to a regional statement, Durham is the first regional municipality in Ontario to receive a Bicycle Friendly Community designation, highlighting its leadership in cycling initiatives.
The recognition reflects Durham’s ongoing efforts to promote cycling through strong policies, collaboration among local municipalities, and targeted investments in cycling infrastructure. Key initiatives include the creation of a Regional Cycling Plan, the adoption of a Complete Streets approach, and the implementation of paved shoulder standards across the region.
“This recognition underscores our dedication to creating safe, connected, and accessible cycling options for residents and visitors,” said Sandra Austin, Commissioner of Community Growth and Economic Development. “We are proud to join Ontario’s network of Bicycle Friendly Communities and look forward to building on this momentum.”
The Bicycle Friendly Community program evaluates municipalities based on five key areas: engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement, and evaluation. Durham’s Bronze designation signals meaningful progress and provides a strong foundation for continued improvements to cycling infrastructure and safety.
