In Durham police news, a 65-year-old Toronto man has been arrested and charged with uttering threats after allegedly targeting the Ahmadiyya Durham Mosque Baitul Mahdi in Pickering.
The Durham police news unit for hate crimes and extremism received a tip from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on Jan. 28 about online threats made toward the mosque, located at 3505 Salem Road.
On Thursday, Durham police confirmed the arrest. “We recognize the significant impact these types of incidents have on our community, particularly among members of the Muslim community,” said authorities. “Acts that target or instill fear in any group are unacceptable. We remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone in our community.”
