Durham Municipal Election Nears as 85% Say They Plan to Vote

The Durham Municipal Election is approaching, and a new online reader poll suggests interest in Ontario’s 2026 local elections could be considerably stronger than turnout recorded four years ago.

Ontario residents will vote on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026, with Durham Region voters choosing representatives in Ajax, Brock, Clarington, Oshawa, Pickering, Scugog, Uxbridge and Whitby.

Municipal elections determine who will serve as mayors, local and regional councillors and school board trustees, making the vote directly relevant to services and decisions affecting residents’ everyday lives.

Candidate nominations remain open until 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, according to Ontario’s official 2026 municipal election guidance.

Nearly 85% of Poll Respondents Say They Will Vote

An INsauga reader poll asked whether respondents intend to vote in October’s municipal election.

As of Aug. 18, 84.8 per cent, or 1,264 respondents, said yes.

Another 15.2 per cent, representing 227 respondents, said they did not plan to vote.

The result suggests strong interest among people who participated in the poll, but it should not be treated as a scientific forecast of actual Ontario voter turnout. Readers who actively visit local-news websites and voluntarily respond to online polls may be more interested in municipal politics than the wider electorate.

That distinction is important when comparing the poll result with previous election turnout.

Ontario Municipal Turnout Was Much Lower in 2022

According to figures cited in the supplied report, average municipal election turnout across Ontario was 32.9 per cent in 2022, based on municipalities that held direct elections and supplied turnout information.

That was lower than the 2018 provincial municipal turnout figure of 38.3 per cent.

The contrast between those historical numbers and the nearly 85 per cent reported in the online reader poll is substantial.

However, the poll should be viewed primarily as an indication of engagement among its respondents rather than evidence that province-wide turnout will more than double in October.

Durham Voters Head to Polls Oct. 26

The Durham Municipal Election takes place on the same date as elections across Ontario: Oct. 26.

Durham Region’s official election information lists all eight lower-tier municipalities participating in the 2026 vote.

Those municipalities are:

  • Ajax
  • Brock
  • Clarington
  • Oshawa
  • Pickering
  • Scugog
  • Uxbridge
  • Whitby

Regional councillors will continue to be elected, although Durham Region notes that the Regional Chair will not appear on the 2026 municipal ballot following changes introduced by the province earlier this year.

Candidate Deadline Arrives Aug. 21

Before voters can turn their attention fully to the campaign, another important deadline arrives this week.

Ontario says candidates for municipal council or school trustee positions must file their nomination by 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21.

The nomination period began May 1.

After nominations close, municipal clerks have until Aug. 24 to certify or reject nominations, according to provincial guidance.

That means candidate lists currently published for places such as Ajax, Pickering and Uxbridge may still change before they become final.

Why Municipal Turnout Matters

Municipal governments make decisions involving roads, recreation, local development, property taxes, public spaces and many other services residents regularly use.

Durham Region describes municipal elections as an opportunity for residents to influence decisions affecting everyday services ranging from transportation to water and other regional responsibilities.

Despite that direct impact, municipal elections have historically attracted significantly fewer voters than provincial or federal contests.

The new poll therefore raises an interesting question about whether increased public interest, competitive local races and greater awareness could improve participation in 2026.

Online Poll Is Encouraging but Not a Turnout Prediction

For now, the strongest conclusion is that the respondents to this particular poll appear highly motivated.

Nearly 85 per cent saying they intend to vote is notable, but actual turnout will only be known after ballots are counted on Oct. 26.

As the Durham Municipal Election campaign develops, candidate announcements, debates and local issues may influence whether voter engagement ultimately translates into higher turnout.

Residents interested in participating should also confirm that they meet municipal voting requirements and that their information is properly recorded for the election. Durham Region directs voters to provincial voter-registration resources for that purpose.
