Drivers travelling through Durham Region should prepare for overnight lane restrictions and possible delays on several provincial highways on Wednesday, July 22.
The scheduled Durham highway closures and roadwork affect portions of Highway 401, Highway 407 ETR, Highway 412, Highway 35/115, Highway 7, Highway 7/12, Highway 12 and Highway 7A.
Most of the projects involve one or more lane closures rather than a complete shutdown. However, brief police-assisted closures, ramp restrictions and several simultaneous lane closures could still create delays.
Drivers should check Ontario 511 before departing because roadwork schedules can change because of weather, emergencies or construction progress. Ontario 511 provides current roadwork, incidents, closures and traffic-camera information for provincial highways.
Durham Highway Closures on Highway 401
Some of the most significant restrictions are scheduled on Highway 401 in Ajax and Oshawa.
In Ajax, nightly work is affecting the Highway 401 express lanes near Westney Road. Ontario 511 lists alternating lane restrictions in both directions, with several lanes potentially affected during the overnight construction period. The westbound work may also affect access from Westney Road.
In Oshawa, eastbound and westbound Highway 401 traffic between Ritson Road and Harmony Road may be reduced by two alternating lanes overnight.
Police-assisted stoppages lasting approximately 15 minutes are also scheduled along this section. Although these are not continuous full closures, traffic could be temporarily stopped while construction activities are completed.
The eastbound Ritson Road entrance and Harmony Road exit may also be affected during parts of the work. Westbound restrictions may affect the Harmony Road entrance and Ritson Road exit.
Additional nightly lane restrictions continue between Harmony Road in Oshawa and Highway 35/115 in Clarington, as well as between Highway 35/115 and the Port Hope boundary.
Highway 407 and Highway 412 Work
Highway 407 ETR drivers should expect overnight maintenance between Sideline 14 in Ajax and Harmony Road North in Oshawa.
Westbound maintenance is also scheduled between Simcoe Street in Oshawa and Thickson Road in Whitby. Ramp access at Harmony Road, Simcoe Street and other interchanges may be affected during the overnight period.
On Highway 412 in Whitby, one alternating lane is scheduled to close overnight in both directions between Highway 401 and Highway 407.
The northbound Highway 412 entrance from Highway 401 is also included in the roadwork schedule. Motorists connecting between the two highways should allow additional travel time.
Northern Durham Lane Restrictions
Drivers in Whitby, Scugog and Brock should prepare for nightly lane closures on Highway 7/12.
One right lane is scheduled to close in both directions between Columbus Road in Whitby and the Highway 7 northern junction near Sunderland. The work is expected to continue overnight through the end of July.
Highway 7A eastbound is also affected between Highway 7/12 near Manchester and Nesbitt Line Road in Port Perry.
Additional Highway 12 restrictions are scheduled between the Whitby area and Brock Township, while Highway 7 work affects the corridor between Whitby and Brock.
Clarington Highway Work
Clarington drivers should watch for nightly maintenance on Highway 35/115 between Highway 401 and Highway 35.
Ontario 511 lists one alternating lane in both the northbound and southbound directions. A separate daytime southbound lane restriction is also scheduled along part of the corridor.
Motorists should reduce their speed in work zones, follow temporary signs and leave additional space around construction vehicles and workers.
The Durham highway closures and lane restrictions are scheduled and may be postponed or modified. Drivers should confirm the latest conditions through Ontario 511 immediately before travelling.
