Drivers who do not urgently need fuel may benefit from waiting until Thursday, August 6, before filling their tanks. However, prices can vary between individual gas stations and communities, and the predicted decrease is not guaranteed at every location.
Regular gas expected to fall 10 cents
Canadians for Affordable Energy’s Gas Wizard service predicts day-ahead gasoline prices using fuel-market data and pricing models. Its forecasts are intended to help drivers compare today’s expected prices with those anticipated for the following day.
According to the supplied forecast, regular gasoline is expected to decline by 10 cents per litre across the GTA, Hamilton, Niagara Region, Windsor, Barrie, Kingston and several other southern Ontario communities.
Peterborough could see an even larger decrease of approximately 11 cents per litre, bringing regular gasoline there to about $1.599 per litre. Ottawa’s predicted price is approximately $1.619 after a 10-cent reduction.
The national average for regular gasoline was forecast to fall by almost 10 cents compared with Wednesday.
Premium and diesel prices also forecast lower
The Durham Gas Price Drop is not limited to regular gasoline.
Premium fuel is also expected to decrease by approximately 10 cents per litre across much of southern Ontario. In the GTA, premium gasoline is forecast to cost approximately $1.929 per litre on Thursday.
Diesel prices are predicted to decline by between seven and nine cents, depending on the location. The GTA is expected to see a nine-cent diesel decrease, bringing the forecast price to about $2.079 per litre.
These figures remain estimates, and individual retailers determine their own pump prices. Stations located close to highways, in rural communities or in areas with limited competition may charge more than the regional forecast.
Potential savings for Durham drivers
A 10-cent decrease could produce noticeable savings for motorists purchasing a full tank.
A driver buying 40 litres of regular gasoline could save approximately $4 compared with Wednesday’s predicted price. A 60-litre purchase could cost about $6 less.
The actual savings will depend on the station, the amount purchased and whether the full predicted decrease appears at local pumps.
Residents should compare nearby fuel prices before travelling a long distance solely to find a cheaper station. The fuel consumed during an extra trip may reduce or eliminate the intended savings.
Forecast should not be treated as guaranteed
Gas Wizard describes its figures as short-term price predictions rather than confirmed retail prices. The platform provides city-level forecasts intended to help consumers decide when to fill up, but prices may change because of wholesale costs, local competition, taxes and retailer decisions.
Drivers should therefore check current pump prices in Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering and other Durham communities before making a purchase.
