The Durham DEI strategy launch plan has been officially introduced by the Region of Durham, marking a significant step toward building more inclusive and connected communities. Alongside the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Strategy for 2025–2029, the region has also launched the 2025–2030 Durham Local Immigration Partnership (DLIP) Community and Inclusion Plan.
These two initiatives form a unified approach aimed at improving inclusion, belonging, and service coordination across Durham Region.
The Durham DEI strategy launch plan reflects years of ongoing work within the region to promote diversity and equity. Developed through extensive consultation with residents, service providers, regional staff, and elected officials, the strategy is grounded in community feedback and best practices. It aims to align existing efforts while establishing clear goals, accountability measures, and a shared long-term vision.
Regional officials emphasized that while diversity and inclusion initiatives have been in place for years, this strategy creates a more structured and measurable approach. It outlines responsibilities across departments and ensures that progress can be tracked effectively over time.
In addition to the DEI strategy, the Durham DEI strategy launch plan includes the release of the DLIP Community and Inclusion Plan for 2025–2030. This plan focuses specifically on supporting newcomers and enhancing collaboration among organizations that provide settlement and community services.
Immigration continues to play a key role in Durham Region’s growth, contributing to both economic development and cultural diversity. The DLIP plan is designed to strengthen support systems for newcomers, ensuring they can successfully integrate into their new communities.
The plan serves as a roadmap for municipalities, service providers, and community partners to work together more effectively. It highlights the importance of improving access to services, simplifying navigation for newcomers, and creating stronger connections within the community.
A major focus of the DLIP plan is amplifying the voices of newcomers and addressing the unique challenges they face. By prioritizing innovation and adaptability, the region aims to respond to evolving needs and ensure that services remain relevant and effective.
Regional Chair John Henry stated that the strategy is a crucial tool for aligning efforts and strengthening accountability across the organization. He highlighted the importance of having a clear direction to guide future actions.
Meanwhile, officials overseeing diversity and inclusion initiatives stressed that supporting newcomers is essential not only for individual success but also for the broader social and economic well-being of the region.
The Durham DEI strategy launch plan represents a long-term commitment to creating a more inclusive environment where all residents can thrive. By combining strategic planning with community collaboration, Durham Region aims to build stronger, more welcoming communities for current and future generations.
