The Claremont playground closure will continue while the City of Pickering and the equipment installer complete several adjustments required before the new play structure can open. The playground at Claremont Memorial Park has been installed, but the City says it does not yet comply with every applicable Canadian Standards Association safety requirement. The newly installed swings have passed inspection and are open for public use.
The City posted a temporary closure notice on July 24, advising residents that the main playground structure was not ready. Pickering said it was actively working to resolve the outstanding issues and confirmed that the swings were safe to use. The park remains open, but visitors should follow all barriers and closure notices around the unfinished play area.
Independent Inspection Identified Required Adjustments
All new City of Pickering playgrounds undergo an independent third-party inspection before opening. The inspection is intended to confirm that equipment, protective surfacing, spacing and other components meet applicable safety standards once installation is complete.
According to information provided by the City, construction of the play structure was completed on June 22. The playground remained closed while other construction and site work continued. An inspection conducted on July 9 identified several items requiring adjustment before the complete playground could open.
City staff emphasized that the playground had never opened for public use before the inspection and that no injuries had occurred. The review was therefore a pre-opening safety check rather than a response to an incident involving a child.
Natural Materials Require On-Site Refinements
The new playground includes natural materials and wooden components selected following consultation with Claremont residents. According to Pickering’s manager of landscape and parks development, equipment made with wood can require different on-site adjustments from conventional steel or plastic structures after the complete design is assembled and inspected.
The City described inspections, corrections and follow-up reviews as normal parts of bringing a new playground into service. Evaluating the finished installation allows inspectors and contractors to identify elements requiring refinement before children are permitted to use the equipment.
Pickering is working with the installer to complete the required changes. The remaining equipment will stay closed until those adjustments are finished and a follow-up review confirms that the structure meets the applicable standards.
New Swings Are Open and Safe to Use
Although the main play structure remains unavailable, the new swings were cleared for use and opened on July 24. The City’s public notice specifically states that the swings are safe, allowing families to use that section of the upgraded park while the remaining work continues.
Residents should not enter closed sections or allow children to use equipment surrounded by barriers. A structure that appears physically complete may still require safety adjustments, surface work or final approval before public access is permitted.
Claremont Memorial Park also includes recreational amenities such as playground equipment, sports facilities, swings and outdoor public spaces.
Why the Claremont Playground Closure Continues
The City was reportedly targeting August 7 for the complete playground opening. That date depends on the installer completing the identified adjustments and the follow-up inspection being finalized successfully.
Until then, only the swings have been approved for use. The main structure must remain behind barriers even if the equipment appears finished.
