Dr. Linda Carter, the founder of Carter Veterinary Hospital in Bowmanville, has been awarded the prestigious 2026 Award of Merit from the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) for her outstanding contributions to the veterinary profession.

The OVMA’s Award of Merit recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service to the veterinary field, either through their practice or contributions to advancing veterinary medicine. This distinguished award is given to those who have made a significant public impact on the profession, whether through clinical work, education, or other avenues that benefit animal care and welfare.

Since earning her degree from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2002, Dr. Carter has dedicated her career to animal welfare, specializing in the care of small animals, exotics, and wildlife. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a deep commitment to both the medical and educational aspects of her profession, ensuring that her patients receive the highest level of care and that future generations of veterinary professionals are well-trained and equipped.

In addition to her clinical expertise, Dr. Carter has made valuable contributions to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. She has served as the head veterinarian for several wildlife rescue organizations and is a certified wildlife rehabilitator. Her voluntary efforts have involved caring for injured and orphaned wildlife, often giving up her time to ensure their recovery and return to their natural habitats.

In 2016, Dr. Carter expanded her vision by founding Carter Veterinary Hospital in Bowmanville. Since its opening, the clinic has gained a strong reputation within the community, winning multiple Reader’s Choice and Top Choice Awards. These accolades are a testament to the high standard of care and customer service that the clinic provides.

“Dr. Carter embodies everything our profession strives for: knowledge, empathy, and integrity,” said Dr. Alyna Alexandrov, a colleague at Carter Veterinary Hospital. “She gives so much of herself to her patients, her team, and her community, and she does it with humility and kindness.”

Dr. Carter’s personal life reflects the same devotion that she shows professionally. She is not only a dedicated veterinarian but also a loving wife and mother to three children and eight “furry children” — her beloved pets. Her balanced approach to family, work, and volunteerism is an inspiration to both her colleagues and the Bowmanville community.

The 2026 Award of Merit highlights the positive influence Dr. Carter has had on the veterinary profession and her unwavering dedication to the well-being of animals. As she continues to expand her contributions to both animal welfare and the veterinary community, her legacy of compassion, education, and service will no doubt inspire future veterinarians.
