A new Ajax Whitby Community Funding investment from the Ontario government will provide nearly 1.3 million dollars to support three non-profit organizations serving residents across Durham Region.
The funding was announced through the Ontario Trillium Foundation Grow program, which supports organizations working to strengthen communities, improve services and expand opportunities for residents.
Officials say the Ajax Whitby Community Funding package totals 1,270,700 dollars and will help support two organizations based in Whitby and one located in Ajax.
The investment aims to support programs that promote active lifestyles, strengthen social services and provide more opportunities for youth and families.
Provincial officials say funding from the program also helps organizations enhance arts, culture and community programs across Ontario.
Whitby Member of Provincial Parliament Lorne Coe said the three organizations receiving funding play an important role in supporting residents throughout the region.
Coe described the groups as “pillars of our community,” noting that the Ajax Whitby Community Funding will help expand programs that benefit individuals and families across Durham Region.
Three organizations are receiving funding through the program.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Durham and Northumberland, based in Ajax, will receive 346,000 dollars to support mentorship programs for children and youth.
The organization provides mentorship opportunities that help young people develop confidence, build positive relationships and achieve personal goals.
The Alzheimer Society of Durham Region, located in Whitby, will receive 461,300 dollars to help support programs assisting individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
The funding will help expand services that provide guidance, support and education for families caring for loved ones affected by dementia.
A third organization, Sunrise Developmental Support Services, also based in Whitby, will receive 463,400 dollars.
Sunrise Developmental Support Services provides programs that assist individuals with developmental disabilities, helping them gain independence and participate fully in community life.
Officials say the Ajax Whitby Community Funding initiative is intended to help organizations expand their services while also strengthening the social infrastructure that supports communities.
The investment is also expected to help create employment opportunities and ensure these organizations can continue delivering important services.
Community leaders say the funding will help the organizations improve programs, reach more people and continue providing essential services throughout Durham Region.
