A Lincoln Avenue Public School student has won the Ajax Fire Chief for a Day contest after submitting a poster focused on practical household fire safety.
The student, identified by Durham Radio News as Lokesh, was selected from 573 submissions. Ajax Fire and Emergency Services planned to surprise him with the result at school on Wednesday afternoon.
The winner’s activities include overseeing a fire drill at Lincoln Avenue Public School and touring Ajax Fire Station 1.
Poster highlights family fire planning
The winning design showed an understanding of creating and practising a home escape plan, keeping an emergency kit ready and testing smoke alarms regularly.
Kevin Vaughan, Ajax’s chief fire prevention officer, thanked the winner for demonstrating leadership and responsibility while encouraging safer habits at home.
The announcement comes during Fire Prevention Week. Families can strengthen an escape plan by identifying two ways out where possible, choosing an outdoor meeting place and making sure children understand that they should leave immediately rather than hide during a fire.
The public report did not reproduce the student’s full poster or state the judging criteria beyond its fire-safety content. It also did not identify other finalists.
