Update — September 2, 2026: More than a month after the walkout began, workers at Casino Ajax and Pickering Casino Resort remain on strike. The two properties continue to operate, but visitors should check current hours and available amenities before travelling.
The Ajax Pickering casino strike began early Friday after negotiations between Unifor Local 1090 and Great Canadian Entertainment failed to produce a new collective agreement for nearly 900 employees. Union members at Casino Ajax and Pickering Casino Resort began picketing at 12:01 a.m. on July 31, 2026.
Unifor says the striking employees work across gaming, hospitality, hotel and support operations at both Durham Region properties. The bargaining unit includes cashiers, slot attendants and technicians, table-game dealers and technicians, gaming hosts, player-service representatives, cooks, servers, housekeepers, bus drivers and shipping and receiving staff.
Union seeks wages and job security
The union says wages, working conditions and job security are among the main issues in the dispute. It is seeking a wage increase that recognizes the workers’ experience and contribution to the properties.
Unifor’s strike information page continued to list round-the-clock picket lines at both Durham casinos in its latest available update. As of September 2, neither the union nor the employer had publicly announced a tentative agreement or a return-to-work date.
Both Durham casinos remain open
Great Canadian Entertainment continues to advertise activities at Casino Ajax and Pickering Casino Resort during September. The properties have remained open during the labour disruption, although hours, entrances and amenities may be affected.
Customers planning a visit should confirm restaurant, table-game and other service availability directly with the property before arriving because operating details can change.
Strike now in its second month
The labour action affects two major entertainment and hospitality employers in Durham Region. It extends beyond gaming-floor operations to food service, hotel services, transportation and property support.
