Ajax MPP Rob Cerjanec Enters Ontario Liberal Leadership Race

Ajax MPP Rob Cerjanec has officially entered the Ontario Liberal leadership race, becoming the latest candidate to seek the top job in the provincial party as it looks to rebuild following its electoral performance.

Cerjanec, a rookie legislator who won the Ajax riding in the 2025 provincial election, announced his candidacy under the slogan “Let’s Build Ontario.” His campaign platform centres on affordability measures and improving the province’s education and health-care systems, two issues that have consistently ranked among the top concerns for Ontario voters in recent years.

The Ajax representative has already secured a key endorsement from fellow Liberal caucus member Stephanie Bowman, who will help run his campaign. Bowman’s involvement adds organizational experience to Cerjanec’s bid and signals that his candidacy has genuine backing from within the existing Liberal caucus at Queen’s Park.

Cerjanec joins an increasingly crowded and competitive field of candidates vying for the Liberal leadership. Former federal Liberal cabinet minister Navdeep Bains recently entered the race, bringing significant name recognition and extensive political experience to the contest. Provincial caucus member and former hospital president Lee Fairclough is also in the running, offering a health-care perspective that resonates with many Ontarians frustrated with long wait times and strained hospital resources. Dylan Marando, a former political staffer, was the first to formally declare his candidacy and has been building his campaign for several weeks now.

Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith had been considered a potential contender for the provincial leadership but indicated his run is now much less likely after losing a federal nomination race in Scarborough Southwest to Ahsanul Hafiz, effectively narrowing the field of high-profile candidates who might have otherwise entered the contest.

For Durham Region residents, Cerjanec’s candidacy carries particular significance. As the sitting MPP for Ajax, he represents one of the key Durham ridings that the Liberals managed to secure in the last election, and his leadership bid could help raise the party’s profile across the region. His focus on affordability and health care resonates with many Durham families who have been dealing with rising costs of living and ongoing challenges accessing timely medical care in their rapidly growing communities throughout the region.

The Ontario Liberal leadership race continues to take shape, with more candidates potentially joining the field before the contest concludes. The winner will be tasked with rebuilding the party’s fortunes, uniting different factions within the Liberal movement, and positioning the party as a viable alternative for Ontario voters when the next provincial election is eventually called.

Cerjanec’s entry into the race adds a distinctly Durham Region voice to the provincial political conversation at a time when the region is experiencing rapid population growth and increasing influence in Ontario politics. His campaign will be watched closely by political observers across the province as the leadership race unfolds in the coming months, with Durham Region residents having a direct personal connection to one of the leading contenders for the top job in the Ontario Liberal Party.
