Ajax library workers have rejected a proposed contract containing a two-tier provision, extending a labour dispute that had already placed the union in a legal strike position.
The rejection was announced Friday by the union representing Ajax Public Library employees. The union said workers want the same standards to apply rather than different terms for current and future employees.

The vote follows CUPE Local 54’s earlier announcement that workers had completed the steps needed to enter a strike position.
The union previously identified wages, job security and two-tier language as central issues. A two-tier agreement generally sets different compensation or working conditions based on hiring date.
