A Courtice house fire death is under active investigation after one person was found deceased inside a residence late Sunday night in Durham Region.

Emergency crews were dispatched to a reported house fire on Nash Road near Varcoe Road in Courtice at approximately 10:37 p.m., according to Durham Regional Police. The residential area, located east of Oshawa, was quickly filled with flashing lights as firefighters, paramedics, and police responded to the serious incident.

Upon arrival, fire crews encountered heavy smoke and significant flames coming from the home. The intensity of the blaze initially made it unsafe for firefighters to immediately enter the structure. Crews worked swiftly to suppress the flames and stabilize conditions before conducting a search of the residence.

Once entry was made, first responders located one individual deceased inside the home. The identity of the victim has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. Police have not confirmed whether the individual was the sole occupant of the residence at the time of the fire.

The Courtice house fire death has now been referred to the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM), which has been notified and is attending the scene. Fire investigators remain on-site to determine the origin, cause, and circumstances surrounding the blaze. At this stage, authorities have not indicated whether foul play is suspected.

Durham Regional Police officers secured the scene overnight as investigators continued their work. Nash Road was temporarily closed between Varcoe Road and Centerfield Drive to allow emergency services to operate safely and efficiently. The road has since reopened, but a visible police and fire presence remained in the area into Monday morning.

Residents in the surrounding neighbourhood described hearing sirens and seeing emergency vehicles arrive shortly before 11 p.m. Some neighbours reported smelling smoke and noticing flames before crews arrived. The tragic outcome has left the community shaken, as house fires are always deeply distressing, particularly when they result in loss of life.

The Courtice house fire death marks another reminder of how quickly residential fires can escalate. Fire officials routinely stress the importance of working smoke alarms on every level of a home and outside sleeping areas. Early detection can make the critical difference between safe evacuation and tragedy.

Authorities have not yet provided details regarding whether smoke alarms were present or functioning in the home. Investigators will assess multiple factors, including potential electrical issues, heating sources, cooking equipment, or other possible ignition sources.

The Office of the Fire Marshal is responsible for investigating fires that involve fatalities in Ontario. Their role includes determining the cause and origin of the fire, analyzing burn patterns, and reviewing physical evidence. The findings will help clarify how the Courtice house fire death occurred and whether any further action is required.

Durham Regional Police are assisting with scene security and any necessary investigative steps. Officials are asking anyone who may have information related to the incident to contact police.

As the investigation continues, the community of Courtice is mourning the loss of a life in what authorities have described as a tragic event. Further updates regarding the Courtice house fire death will be released as more information becomes available from investigators.
