Durham Region residents are in for a classic spring weather rollercoaster this week, featuring a gradual warmup and midweek sun that will see temperatures climb from sub-zero lows to mid-teen highs. Following a brief return to colder conditions and potential flurries early in the week, Environment Canada projects a significant temperature swing. By Wednesday and Thursday, the region will enjoy double-digit warmth and clear skies, providing a much-needed break from the damp, windy conditions that marked the previous weekend.

The week began with a chilly Sunday night, seeing temperatures drop to -2 C with a wind chill making it feel closer to -8. Monday continues this trend with a high of only 3 C and a moderate UV index of 4, reminding residents to protect their skin even in cooler weather. However, the gradual warmup and midweek sun start to take effect on Tuesday as the high hits 10 C. While there is a 30 per cent chance of showers on Tuesday, the clouds are expected to break just in time for the most pleasant stretch of the week.

Wednesday and Thursday are set to be the highlights of the forecast. Wednesday will bring full sunshine and a high of 15 C, followed by an even warmer Thursday with clear skies and a high of 16 C. These conditions represent a significant departure from the seasonal normals and offer ideal weather for outdoor activities in Oshawa, Whitby, and across Clarington. Overnight lows during this period will remain relatively mild, holding between 4 C and 8 C, a far cry from the freezing starts seen earlier in the week.

As the region moves toward the weekend, the gradual warmup and midweek sun will give way to more unsettled conditions. Friday is expected to bring a mix of sun and cloud with a 40 per cent chance of rain, though the high will remain steady at a pleasant 16 C. By Saturday, the clouds will dominate, and a 40 per cent chance of showers will persist throughout the day as the high dips slightly to 13 C. Nighttime temperatures on Saturday will feel like 5 C, signaling a slightly cooler end to the seven-day cycle.

In summary, the week of April 19 to April 25 is a tale of two halves. After navigating a frosty start, residents can look forward to the gradual warmup and midweek sun that peaks on Thursday afternoon. Commuters and travelers throughout the GTA should prepare for varying conditions, ranging from Monday morning wind chills to Thursday’s bright sunshine. With a chance of rain returning by the weekend, Wednesday and Thursday will be the best days to take advantage of the spring warmth in southern Ontario.
