Oshawa’s reputation is getting a comedic makeover. On Thursday, April 9, 2026, the first episode of the new mocumentary-style web series ‘Destination Oshawa’ debuted on Bell Fibe TV1. Starring Toronto stand-up comedian and actor Hannah Veldhoen, the series follows a fictional, misfit tourism board on a high-stakes mission: to get Oshawa off Canada’s “Worst Cities” list by any means necessary.

A Relatable Quest for a Rebrand

The series pilot, titled “You’re hired! You’re hired!”, introduces us to Hannah, who unexpectedly becomes the director of the Oshawa Tourism Board after her boss passes away. Confronted with the city’s persistent “Dirty Shwa” moniker and its low ranking on national lists, Hannah assembles an “elite” task force of eccentric individuals. Their goal is to reintroduce the city to the global stage and transform it into a tourism powerhouse.

Director Jon Riera utilizes a workplace-ensemble style that has already drawn comparisons from early viewers to hits like Parks and Recreation and Portlandia. The humor stems from the team’s unwavering, often delusional, optimism in the face of passive-aggressive resistance from “real” Oshawa residents.

Spotlighting Durham Region Landmarks

Local viewers will recognize several iconic spots throughout the 14-minute debut episode. The production, which filmed last October, features shenanigans at:

  • The Parkwood Estate: A historic site often used in Hollywood productions, here serving as a backdrop for the board’s grand ambitions.

  • The Memorial Park Bandshell: A staple of downtown community gatherings.

  • Midtown Mall: Used as a setting for the team’s grassroots outreach efforts.

By placing these familiar locations at the center of the story, ‘Destination Oshawa’ manages to celebrate the city’s unique character while poking fun at the hurdles of municipal rebranding.

Social Media Buzz and Cultural Impact

The reaction to the premiere has been overwhelmingly positive on platforms like Instagram, with many users hailing it as part of a “Canadian media Renaissance.” For the Durham Region, the series represents a rare moment where local stereotypes are reclaimed through satire.

While the show is fictional, the timing aligns with real-world efforts to revitalize downtown Oshawa and diversify the local economy. Whether Hannah and her team will actually succeed in making “millions” in tourism remains to be seen, but for now, ‘Destination Oshawa’ is successfully putting the city on the map—in a very funny way. Episode 1 is currently available for streaming, with future episodes expected to dive deeper into the quirky neighborhoods that make the “Shwa” shine.
