Durham Region, Ontario – Ontario is gearing up for a significant boost in tourism, thanks to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will bring a wave of international visitors to the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), including Durham Region, from June to July. The highly anticipated sporting event is expected to attract global attention, drawing tourists to Ontario’s vibrant cities and regions, eager to explore beyond the soccer matches.

With Toronto hosting a selection of games during the summer, research from Destination Ontario and Context Research Group indicates that the influx of soccer fans will likely result in increased regional travel across the province. This surge in tourism presents an excellent opportunity for local businesses and attractions throughout Durham Region, as visitors look to experience Ontario in its entirety.

Recent surveys reveal that 54% of respondents plan to travel beyond Toronto after the FIFA World Cup games conclude, highlighting the potential for increased tourism throughout the GTA and Ontario. The survey, which polled likely visitors, shows that tourists are keen to explore multiple regions within the province during their stay, a trend that could significantly benefit local economies in Durham, Halton, Niagara, and Ottawa.

Niagara Region has emerged as the top destination for post-World Cup travelers, with 54% of those surveyed expressing interest in visiting this famous wine country and tourist hotspot. Other areas in Southern Ontario, including Ottawa, are also expected to see significant interest from tourists.

Preparing for Increased Visitors

The President and CEO of Destination Ontario, Vincenza Ronaldi, emphasized the importance of data and research in shaping tourism strategies. “Having these insights in advance of the FIFA World Cup 2026 allows our tourism partners to better understand visitor intentions and prepare experiences that encourage travelers to explore more of Ontario during their stay,” she stated.

For Durham Region, this could mean an influx of tourists exploring attractions like Lake Ontario, Durham Regional Forest, and historical sites within the region. Local tourism officials and businesses are being encouraged to prepare for the increased interest, offering tailored experiences to visitors looking to enjoy the region’s natural beauty, local food scene, and cultural landmarks.

Tourist Interests: Food, Sightseeing, and More

The survey also highlighted the types of experiences tourists are most likely to seek during their trip. Visitors to Ontario, particularly those arriving for the World Cup, are most excited about food and drink experiences, sightseeing, nightlife, and visits to historic sites and national parks. With these interests in mind, businesses in Durham Region and other parts of Ontario can create experiences that cater to these demands, such as offering local cuisine, organizing sightseeing tours, and promoting nature walks and cultural events.

Economic Impact on Durham Region

For Durham Region, the surge in visitors presents a unique opportunity to showcase its offerings to a global audience. Local hotels, restaurants, and cultural venues are set to benefit from the increase in tourism, with travelers eager to explore Ontario’s diverse regions.

The projected increase in regional travel also highlights the ongoing importance of tourism marketing for the area. Durham officials are encouraged to collaborate with Destination Ontario to enhance visibility and attract visitors to local attractions, ensuring that Durham stands out as a key destination in the post-World Cup tourism boom.
