An Ontario snow ice alert has been issued as a mix of snow, ice pellets, and freezing rain is expected to impact southern Ontario, including Durham Region, on Friday.
Despite it being the first official day of spring, conditions across the region will feel far from seasonal. The Ontario snow ice alert warns of slippery surfaces and possible travel disruptions throughout the day.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a special weather statement covering multiple areas, including Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Halton Region, and Durham Region.
According to the forecast, two to five centimetres of snow or ice pellets could accumulate starting early Friday morning and continuing into the early afternoon.
The Ontario snow ice alert also highlights the risk of freezing rain in some areas. A yellow-level warning has been issued for regions such as Caledon, Halton Hills, Milton, and parts of Waterloo Region, where ice buildup of two to five millimetres is expected.
Weather officials warn that road conditions could deteriorate quickly, especially during the morning commute.
“Roads and walkways may be difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow or ice pellets,” Environment Canada stated, adding that there is an increased risk of slips and falls.
The combination of precipitation types and fluctuating temperatures means conditions could change rapidly throughout the day under the Ontario snow ice alert.
Drivers and pedestrians across Durham Region are advised to exercise caution, allow extra travel time, and prepare for potentially hazardous conditions.
The weather system is expected to move through by the afternoon, but lingering impacts may continue as temperatures remain unstable.
