Durham Regional Police have released body camera footage showing the dramatic rescue of a man who fell into the icy waters of Lake Ontario near Bowmanville Pier earlier this year.

The incident occurred on February 11, 2026, when a 55-year-old man was fishing off the Bowmanville Pier located on West Beach Road in Bowmanville. According to police, the man accidentally fell into the freezing water while standing on the pier.

The Bowmanville Pier Lake Ontario rescue quickly turned into a dangerous situation as the man struggled to climb back onto the icy structure. Winter conditions had made the surface of the pier slippery and difficult to grip, preventing the man from pulling himself out of the water.

Friends who were with him immediately called 911, reporting that the man had fallen into the lake and was unable to get out. Durham Regional Police officers responded to the emergency within minutes.

Body camera footage released by police shows officers working together with the man’s friends in an urgent effort to rescue him. The video captures officers using ropes to reach the victim while coordinating the rescue effort.

As the rescue unfolded, officers could be heard shouting “1-2-3-go!” and “I got you!” while pulling the man toward safety. Working together with the individuals at the scene, officers managed to pull the man out of the freezing water and onto the pier.

Authorities say the conditions were extremely challenging due to the cold temperatures and icy surface, which increased the risk for both the victim and the responding officers.

Once safely out of the water, the man was treated by emergency medical services (EMS) at the scene before being transported to a local hospital for further medical care.

Police have not released details about the extent of the man’s injuries, but officials say the quick response by officers and the assistance of the man’s friends likely prevented a far more serious outcome.

Durham Regional Police praised the officers involved in the rescue for their fast action and teamwork.

“The quick thinking and brave actions of these officers led to a positive outcome, which could have ended in a tragedy,” said DRPS Sgt. Janalyn Dowdle.

Incidents involving cold water can quickly become life-threatening, especially during winter months when water temperatures are near freezing. Falling into cold water can lead to cold shock, rapid loss of body heat, and difficulty moving or staying afloat.

Police say the Bowmanville Pier Lake Ontario rescue serves as a reminder for residents to take extra precautions when spending time near frozen waterfront areas during winter.

Officials encourage anyone fishing or walking near piers, docks, or icy shorelines to remain aware of slippery conditions and to avoid standing too close to the edge.

The dramatic rescue footage released by Durham Regional Police highlights both the dangers of winter waterfront conditions and the importance of quick emergency response when accidents occur.
