A popular Whitby brewery moving downtown has generated excitement among residents after Town Brewery announced plans to relocate into a prominent building in the heart of the community.

Town Brewery, which has operated on Whitby’s waterfront for nearly a decade, confirmed on March 6 that it will be moving into the former Brock Street Brewing and 12welve Bistro location at 244 Brock Street South in downtown Whitby.

The Whitby brewery moving downtown marks a significant milestone for the business, which first opened with the goal of producing quality craft beer while strengthening connections within the local community.

General manager and co-founder Jeff Talmey shared the announcement on social media, reflecting on the brewery’s nine-year journey and its relationship with the Whitby community.

“We started this journey over nine years ago with a straightforward plan—to create a business we could be proud of,” Talmey said. “We wanted to make great products and provide a space where people could come together. Now we finally have a place to call our own in the heart of the town that has supported us from the beginning.”

Since opening in Whitby, Town Brewery has built a strong presence in the local community. The business has hosted beer festivals, live music events, trivia nights, charity fundraisers and running events, becoming a popular meeting spot for residents and visitors.

The move downtown comes after uncertainty about the long-term future of the brewery’s current waterfront location on Charles Street, which is a leased property that developers have shown interest in redeveloping.

Talmey said the brewery team had previously explored relocating to another property at Burns Street and Garrard Road, but the opportunity to take over the building on Brock Street became available after Brock Street Brewing and 12welve Bistro closed earlier this year.

The new space offers a significantly larger footprint, allowing the brewery to operate across all three floors of the building.

Plans for the location include major renovations before the full opening later in 2026. The first-floor restaurant area will remain closed temporarily while redesign work is completed.

Meanwhile, the upper floors will soon begin operating as event venues.

The second floor will be renamed Jackson Hall, while the third floor will operate as an event space called The Office. These areas are expected to host private gatherings, weddings and other events starting later this month.

Despite the upcoming relocation, the brewery confirmed that its taproom and brewing facility at 1632 Charles Street will remain open for now, continuing to serve customers during the transition period.

The announcement has been welcomed by community members, local businesses and municipal leaders.

Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy praised the expansion, noting that Town Brewery has become an important part of the town’s tourism and food scene.

“Town Brewery is already an important part of Whitby’s tourism and culinary success story,” Roy said. “Seeing them expand into this space in the heart of downtown Whitby is fantastic news for our community and our local economy.”

Founded in 2017, Town Brewery specializes in craft beers such as modern pale ales, IPAs and traditional lagers. The brewery has also hosted seasonal pop-up events at the historic Whitby Pump House since 2023.

With its upcoming relocation, the Whitby brewery moving downtown is expected to further strengthen its role as a gathering place for the community and a growing part of Whitby’s vibrant downtown scene.
