Residents in rural areas of Clarington are being encouraged to take part in a program aimed at improving the environment and helping combat climate change by planting trees along local roads.

The municipality has opened applications for its Trees for Rural Roads program, which provides eligible rural residents with free native trees to plant on private property located next to municipal roadways.

Through the program, residents can receive up to 30 trees per year, helping to increase tree coverage along rural roads while also enhancing the ecological value of the area.

Municipal officials say the initiative is designed to support environmental sustainability while also improving the visual appeal of Clarington’s rural landscapes.

Participants in the program will be able to choose from a variety of native tree species, which are selected because they grow well in the region and provide important benefits for local ecosystems.

Native trees help support wildlife habitats, improve soil quality, and contribute to better air quality. They also play a role in capturing carbon dioxide, which helps reduce the effects of climate change.

Clarington officials say planting more trees along rural roadways can also help protect farmland and natural areas by acting as windbreaks, reducing soil erosion, and improving biodiversity in the surrounding environment.

The Trees for Rural Roads program was first launched in 2012, and since then the municipality has distributed and planted more than 9,200 native trees throughout the community.

Local officials say the program has played an important role in expanding the tree canopy across rural parts of Clarington while encouraging residents to take part in environmental stewardship.

In addition to environmental benefits, roadside tree planting can help enhance the natural beauty of rural landscapes and create more attractive roadways for residents and visitors.

Municipal leaders say community participation is essential to the program’s success and are encouraging eligible property owners to apply before the upcoming deadline.

Applications for the program are currently open and will be accepted until March 31.

Residents interested in participating can apply online through the municipality’s website. Once the application period closes, municipal staff will review submissions and notify successful applicants.

Those selected for the program will be contacted in early April with further instructions on how and when to receive their trees.

The municipality says the Trees for Rural Roads program is part of Clarington’s broader commitment to environmental protection, climate action, and community engagement.

By encouraging residents to plant trees and contribute to greener landscapes, the program helps create healthier ecosystems and supports long-term sustainability for the region.

Officials hope more residents will participate this year to help continue expanding Clarington’s growing network of roadside trees.
