Durham Police Racial Slur Incident : Durham Region Chair, John Henry, has publicly condemned the use of a racial slur by a Durham Police deputy chief, which occurred during a meeting with Black officers and civilians. Deputy Chief Chris Kirkpatrick has been suspended with pay while an investigation is underway.

The incident took place during a meeting of the Afro-Caribbean Canadian Internal Support Network, which collaborates with Durham Police to promote inclusion and build stronger relationships with Black youth. Durham Police Chief, Peter Moreira, acknowledged that the deputy chief’s language, although not directed at anyone in particular, was offensive and inconsistent with the police force’s values.
